Happy New Year! Port and Linux.

Happy new year friends and family, merry chrismas, happy hanukkah, fevstive solstice and all that as well. I’m sitting with my new Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop and a glass of port enjoying my day off work. I’m also configuring debian linux on this bad little boy.

For those of you not familiar with linux, it takes several days to several months to set up correctly, and requires knowledge about software development and coding. It’s a pain. More of a surprise is how much of a pain Dell is. Their computers are kind of crap, and you have to call support and wait several days just to get the version of windows you paid for when you bought the computer. That’s right, they won’t ship you the windows CD by default, you have to call them.

Aside from that, the BIOS is lacking a lot of functionality I would expect, and the general feel of the computer is very chintzy. This may be because I’m used to the BMW of the computer world, Apple. However, apples aren’t even that expensive anymore! What’s going on here? What am I THINKING? Free software, people. Let’s hear it?
